How to renew your US passport online in 2026

Use the official site only

The only official place to renew a US passport online is opr.travel.state.gov. The State Department warns that other websites claiming to renew your passport may be fraudulent, and nobody else can sign and submit your application for you.

Who can renew online (main conditions)

• You are 25 or older and renewing an adult 10-year passport.
• You have your most recent passport and it isn't damaged, lost or stolen.
• You are not changing your name, sex or other personal details.
• You are renewing the same type of document you already have (book, card or both).
• You don't need it urgently: online renewal is routine service only and can't be expedited.

If you don't qualify, you can renew by mail with Form DS-82.

When you submit an online renewal, your old passport is cancelled. Don't renew online if you need that passport for a trip in the coming weeks.

Cost

Paid online by debit or credit card. No acceptance fee applies to renewals.

The digital photo

You upload a digital photo instead of mailing prints. It must meet the same rules as a printed photo: white or off-white background, head size in range, no glasses, no shadows and no editing. Uploads are checked, and a poor photo can hold up your renewal.
